RANK OUTSIDERS
History
In the 1990s Rank Outsiders provided a telephone helpline and support from volunteers for those who were being subject to military police interrogation and discharge from the armed forces because of their sexuality. Those making contact were given a volunteer mentor.
All the volunteers had lived experience of discharge. They too were fellow victims. While all were untrained, the support they gave LGBT military people undoubtedly save lives. This was peer-to-peer support in action and it proved its enormous effectiveness.
Mission Statement – OUTstanding
We want to provide LGBT veterans who were discharged, dismissed or constructively dismissed with peer-to-peer support from a trained mentor of their choosing who will have lived experience of the impact of the ban. Among our team are a trained and experienced counsellor and a senior mental health nurse also with lived experience of the ban. This helps the charity provide ongoing care and support. This is combined with regular residential courses of a few days’ length. These will mainly be provided by service charity partners and will only be for our community. The clinical help by the service charity continues until it is no longer needed. Our lead mentors will guide the courses. For those who are reticent about attending a service charity led course, we are building a small number of in-house residential courses.
Along with clinical help we recognise the vital importance of creating a social space for LGBT veterans. This can be online for all but we want to do far more. With regional volunteers we want to create short breaks for veterans in the area. These will be low cost for the events and accommodation. But those who cannot afford to pay will be funded. Travel will be funded for those who struggle.
Our mission is:
To help those LGBT veterans recover from what happened to them during their discharges
To provide clinical and peer to peer support from resources within the charity and from partners
To provide a safe social space for LGBT veterans
