For many LGBT veterans dismissed from the Armed Forces because of their sexuality, there remains unresolved trauma. Their military police interrogations were cruel. Some endured invasive medical examinations. They were thrown out of their service. They lost their careers, their homes and their self-respect. Many report suicidal thoughts or attempts over the years. Little has been done to provide care to this community.
Incidence of military sexual trauma (MST) among women is now discussed publicly. Most lesbians dismissed from the services report varying degrees of MST. For some MST was used as a weapon because of their sexuality. This makes their support much more complex. Prevalence of MST among gay service personnel is not as prevalent but is just as devastating for the individual.
Peer to peer support is invaluable in helping mentees come to terms with their traumatic dismissals but it cannot treat underlying complex PTSD. This can only be helped by clinicians. While OUTstanding has access to clinicians with lived experience on the ban on gays. They are able to assist in a crisis and can provide some help. Specialist ongoing care is best commenced by a residential course. Many are run by armed forces charities specialising in PTSD. These charities have now had training in the additional PTSD caused to LGBT people. Residential courses often allow partners to attend. They play a vital role in the veteran’s recovery. Clinical support continues for each client after the course is completed until it is no longer needed. We are also able to provide these courses in-house for those that do not yet feel confident to engage with a service charity.
Special courses are also provided for the victims of MST in their own courses which are limited to one gender only
